Ontario is one of the most popular destinations for immigrants to Canada, and there are several pathways to achieving permanent resident (PR) status. Each program has different eligibility requirements and timelines.

Express Entry

Express Entry is the federal government's main system for managing applications for permanent residency through three programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For skilled workers with foreign work experience
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For those with at least one year of Canadian skilled work experience
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For qualified tradespeople

Candidates create an online profile and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Those with the highest scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in regular draws.

Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)

Ontario nominates candidates for PR through the OINP. Key streams include:

  • Human Capital Priorities Stream (aligned with Express Entry)
  • Employer Job Offer streams for in-demand occupations
  • Masters Graduate and PhD Graduate streams

Family Sponsorship

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor eligible family members, including spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, and in some cases, parents and grandparents.

Working Toward PR

Many newcomers come to Ontario on a work permit and build Canadian experience before applying for PR. Immigration pathways are complex and the rules change frequently — consulting a licensed immigration lawyer helps ensure your application is complete and maximizes your chances of approval.
