Who Is Eligible for Canadian Citizenship?

To apply for Canadian citizenship as an adult (age 18+), you must be a permanent resident of Canada, have met the physical presence requirement, have filed Canadian income taxes as required, not have any unfulfilled conditions on your permanent residence, not be under a removal order, and not have been convicted of a disqualifying offence.

The Physical Presence Requirement

You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) out of the 5 years immediately before your application date. Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident counts as half a day (up to a maximum of 365 days credit).

Language Requirement

Applicants between ages 18 and 54 must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French. The Citizenship Test

Applicants between ages 18 and 54 must pass a citizenship test demonstrating knowledge of Canada — its history, values, institutions, and symbols. The test is based on the official study guide "Discover Canada" and consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. You need to correctly answer at least 15 to pass.

The Citizenship Oath

Upon approval of your application, you attend a citizenship ceremony where you take the Oath of Citizenship. After taking the oath, you receive your Canadian Citizenship Certificate and officially become a Canadian citizen.
